Hey,

I am PAYG and am heading to the USA. How do I go about setting up my phone so I can call/message home when I am away please?

Do I have to buy a pack or just make sure roaming is on and I get charged when I use it?

Does it automatically work abroad? Can I turn roaming on and off when I am there to help save costs and only use it when I call home?

@Zemma You do not need to enable roaming on PAYG it’s already good to go, but you might want to look at THIS

@Zemma : No, not just like the UK. PAYG packs are not valid there. As it is not in EU, you cannot use your usual UK allowances there but will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/roaming/roaming-costs/countries/usa.

Ok - I am very confused now!!
So am I correct in thinking these are my options:

Do nothing and my phone will work automatically BUT anything I do, I will be charged for?

Buy a roaming add-on (not sure where to go for this, is it a particular pack for USA?) and everything else stays as it is?

Do I need to change/do anything to the settings on my device for either of these options?

This. Your phone will work in the USA once you have used it in the UK first.

You will be charged as per https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/roaming/roaming-costs - connecting to US networks & receiving text messages are free, but anything else - including incoming calls - will be chargeable.

Your 2 options are:

Don't switch your phone on or put it in Flight Mode & you can't be charged anything.
Switch your phone on & anything you do will be charged according to the link I gave you. As stated calls & texts are charged on a per-unit basis. You'll be offered some data add-ons when you land.
