While you are out of touch with land based networks it'll be expensive. You cannot use your usual UK allowances there but will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/roaming-costs/countries/maritimeshipsferriesandcruises.

However when you can get a signal from an EU country you may use your usual UK allowances with up to 50 GB (contract) or 25 GB (PAYG) data per billing month if you have more. If on contract & your contract started after 07/07/2021 there'll be a £2.29 / day charge for using your UK allowances in EU or alternatively you may buy the Roam Abroad Pass for £15 / month.

On PAYG there are charges for using your pack allowances in the EU of either £2.50 / day or £10 / week, to be taken only from your PAYG credit, not your recurring card payment. If you opt for neither you will be paying standard rates for calls & texts.

If you are on contract, remember to text ROAMING to 150 before you leave UK to ensure roaming is enabled on your account.

Please can we have confirmation how to prevent connecting to the Maritime network when cruising. Does this happening automatically or will we receive notification. ?

Due to go on a cruise, I have free EU roaming and with the exception of 1 stop all ports are covered under my free EU roaming. However I have read that it is possible to get automatically connected to the maritime network whilst on the ship and incur high charges. How can I avoid this without having to turn my phone off or on aeroplane mode.
