I hope this does not sound like a stupid question! I will be charged £2.29 a day when I go to Spain. If I don't use my phone while there am I still charged? Thanks!

No, you are only charged the daily rate on any day that you use any of your UK allowances whilst there.

To complete avoid roaming charges in the EU, make sure to enable flight mode thus disabling all mobile network functionality. Then enable WiFi-only.

You will only be able to use internet-based functions while on a WiFi-hotspot - which will also exclude voice calls & text messages. But you will avoid roaming charges.

So if someone calls not knowing you are away you get charged £2.29 even if you dont answer? Can you prevent the phone from roaming or do you have to use Airplane mode?

You are charged for using your UK allowances whilst roaming abroad - this includes answering a call.

My understanding is that missed calls should not count as received calls, EE's core network only treats a call as received when it is answered.

Roaming means using your phone on a foreign network, so yes - use flight mode if you want to avoid all charges. WiFi-calling is not officially supported abroad, but if it does happen to work, roaming charges are a risk.

One to remember is data. If you receive an email it’s data usage. If you use location services ie for photos it’s data usage. Anything that hat can use data even if you’re not using the device ie background data will result in you being charged as its data usage.
