Blocking a caller

I have an iphone 13 on EE contract, I want to block a nuisance caller but before I do I want to know what will happen at their end? When they ring me will it go straight to voicemail? Or will it just ring forever? Will they know I have blocked them?

They should get a message saying the number is unavailable.

Incoming calls from blocked numbers will go directly to your voicemail.

That is disappointing I had hoped it would ring forever.

Thanks for replying but now I am confused as that seems to contradict the message from Chris above, what I read on the internet before posting this question said it depended on your mobile provider what the caller would experience.

Sorry for the confusion, @LaPola. It would only say you're unavailable if you don't have a voicemail set up. @bristolian is correct about this. Here's an Apple article about blocking numbers:
