Is there a way to stop blocked scam calls leaving a message on the answer phone

@macjethro That’s exactly what blocking a number does it goes to the answerphone without the device ringing.

You could try registering with TPS service. You can do that HERE It will take up to 28 days and hopefully after this time you should see a reduced number of calls, whatever calls you do get just tell them you’re registered with the TPS service they will soon hang up. On average I get about one year now and I just waste there time before I mention the TPS service.
