If this is a 3G signal box you're having problems with, these have been decommissioned and I would recommend using WiFi-calling for any indoor coverage issues.

I live in the Undercliff area on the south coast of the Isle of Wight. The signal booster box has been a godsend for the last 12 years. Today the green light has started flashing. I've reset the box half a dozen times - this always worked in the past, but not today. According to the EE website these booster boxes have now been disconnected. So what do I do now? The signal is down to one very faint bar. Setting the phone to Wifi calling does not improve it, neither does connecting to mobile data. Does this mean that we have to revert to crossing the road and standing outdoors in order to get a signal, as we did 12 years ago! Hasn't technology progressed since then? Any help would be appreciated. Forgot to say, I have an iphone 11.

Aside from using the same mobile signal, "mobile data" doesn't have anything to do with voice calls.

WiFi-calling is a way of enabling your phone to make & receive calls & send/receive texts over a WiFi-signal without needing any recourse to the mobile network.

It has been EE's preferred solution to indoor coverage issues for a while now, what are the specific issues you're having with it?

I'm afraid EE have arbitrarily decided no more 3G wifi calling and removed support for the Femtocell boxes.

Didn't tell anyone so took 40 minutes on phone with EE Customer Services before the penny dropped.

So I've dumped EE and gone to Smarty, and now have 4G wifi calling at £6 a month unlimited. Not the way to keep your customers, EE.

There's no such thing as 3G WiFi-calling.

3G is a radio technology that is being switched off by all the UK network operators, and EE is no exception. The Femtocell Signal Boxes, being reliant on 3G technology, are part of that switchoff.

WiFi-calling has been EE's recommended solution to indoor coverage issues for many years now, and that continues to be the case. Calls will seamlessly handover between 4G-calling & WiFi-calling.

Well, "3G wifi calling" is what Owen, the very helpful chap at EE, called it to me - and the Femtocell I bought ages back has been allowing us to make Mobile calls and texts via Broadband for years, so, I don't know what else it is?!

Semantics apart, it's a shame that folks have suddenly found themselves without service, and when calling EE tech for help, finding they didn't know either [I found out via an Internet chat].

It's the sort of thing that happens all the time as tech changes - a bit like the poor sods who bought "Smart TVs" that stopped working after 2 years - a fact of life nowadays.

The legacy signal boxes were 3G femtocells. These provided a 3G signal and connected to EE's core network using your broadband connection.

WiFi-calling allows your phone to use a standard wireless connection for calls & texts, although your router will use the same underlying broadband connection as the signal box did.

The end result is similar, but the means by which it's achieved, are very different.

Well, "3G WiFi calling" makes sense! It's a call that wanted to go over 3G but couldn't & so went over WiFi instead, except it wasn't really WiFi but over Broadband. But who cares! The universal looseness of referring to BB as WiFi will persist for ever 😉 !
