Can't make or receive mobile calls on my EE/Motorola G4

I have an EE contract and a Motorola G4, android 7 mobile. This morning I found I couldn't make any outgoing calls - not even 150. The "Dialling" flashed on and off - no ring tone - until it just gave up with "Call ended".. I find that incoming calls are rerouted to leave messages - which I can't access via voicemail since it too just has the flashing "Dialling" but again no sound - and then "Call ended". I took it into the EE shop in Brixton and a guy did various things and said it was sorted but it hasn't changed at all.

The phone is perhaps 4 years old, I think, but it has given me no problems at all till today.

Any suggestions - other than just replacing it - which might be the sensible solution.
