Can I watch via sky or only via an app?

You can only watch it via the app. You would need to pay extra to mirror it to your TV and also need Apple TV, sorry.

I thought you could login via a BT app on a firestick?

Chromecast with Google TV
cast from your device to your TV using Apple TV or Google Chromecast
visit sport.bt.com on your laptop and log in with your BT Sport ID - you’ll then need a HDMI cable to connect your laptop to your TV
