topic Landline messages in Digital Home Phone

Since going digital, our answering machine is now totally over ridden by having to dial 1571 to hear a message. The problem is how do I know I’ve received a message??. Yes if I go to make a call the dialling tone is a broken one, however if no call is made for several days the message just sits. My husband is 90 and I’m in my 80’ s - all this change and aggro is making life very hard for me anyway. My husband doesn’t even have a mobile, and we are of an age where medical appointments are often made. Can anyone advise please
