Visited a Norfolk beach yesterday, noticed I had dual times. current time and uk time on phone. Then received a msg saying EE couldn't provide data roaming in this country!

Msg said calls would be charged at £3.35 per minute. Glad I didn't call anyone.

About 3/4 hour later I got a welcome back to the UK. Whilst still on beach!

There's a handful of past threads on this board with similar queries, north & West Wales and Kent/SE England are other regular spots..

This behaviour can often happen in border locations where there is no coverage from your home network, but a foreign network serves.. £3.35/minute is an unusual figure though - maritime networks are £2.34/minute, and I wouldn't be surprised by that or a fixed-rig installation being visible from Norfolk.

For as long as your home network has service, this should not happen. If you lose coverage, your phone will naturally attempt to roam by design. The "welcome to country xyz" texts are partly intended to provide notification this is happening.

When your phone regains EE coverage, it will stop roaming. A manual network selection performed when in EE coverage prevents unintentional roaming, but when searched outside EE coverage should serve to confirm lack of service.
