Advice on a 5g Hub needed

Hi All,

I am in a postcode where the fastest broadband is limited to 55 Mbps and whilst this is fine for most things I would like a faster speed for a specific thing.

I have just seen that EE 5G has reached my area and my coverage is show in the photo below. Can I use the Smart 5G hub effectively with my PC where the sole use is to play Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 and soon 2024? What sort of speeds should I expect from a Smart hub? This game benefits from a fast connection hence my questions.

Does anyone use the smart 5g Hub and 5G for gaming like this?

@JoshBear1 Have you not seen posted that mobile internet is not recommended for gaming purpose! If you have 5G on your mobile tether it and try to see how you get on.

Neither 4G nor 5G mobile networks come with any speed guarantees, advice to test using a 4G/5G phone is wise.

I have read so many posts here and on reddit and there was a real mix of "It's awesome" through to "Complete disaster". Given I only play MSFS 2020 which is not primarily a multiplayer game as such it raised a question about would it be good for that, i.e. at least better than the 55mbps I get right now.

Would love to try 5G with my phone but I am on O2 and 5G with them has not reached me yet. 🙄

@JoshBear1 I have the exact same coverage picture that you have, lucky to get 4G indoor not even better outdoor, and the EE said think you are just on the verge of our signal, O2 is what i came from and wish i had stayed. If it was not for wi-fi calling working (was ok O2 also on wi-fi calling) then i would be gone and back to O2. But go a mile and it's great so what can i say oops!

Quick update,

My home broadband gives me 55 ish Mbps download, 8 Mbps upload and a ping around 15 to 20. Here is what the 5G hub from three is giving me on average. You can see the upload is slower. Not sure why. Of course I know speeds may vary so will try for a month and if not better than the home connection will cancel the contract. I went with three based on cost. Taken a monthly contract so can cancel.

Speed test can vary wildly, find one, use that and stick with it, try various times of day and log what you have, i prefer thinkbroadband.com thinkbroadband :: Providing UK Broadband News, Information & Independent Analysis for over 23 years steady as a rock, but each to there own.

Didn’t know pictures had to be approved😁

the numbers are 295 download, 5.3 upload and a ping of 28. Taken a number of readings using Speedtest and this is about the middle ground.

@JoshBear1 Just try flying now, really don't think you will be sending much data up. If your pc based, then you can look at the resource monitor for network up/down.

@JoshBear1 Same rules virtually apply for home or mobile broadband. If gaming best to use an Ethernet connection from PC to Router. Speed test's are what they are, foxy at times, they really do not push much data up/down so guidance for you only. If the device or the server struggle then Up/Down has to be looked at, bias is always down from the Internet, not really an ookla fan on the speedtest.net, fast.com is the same not a big fan of it either, they are functional but each to there own. I personally would always have Home over Mobile. Your 55mb/s not sure if you are on fttc/fttp service but suspect the former is not that bad, managed home is the issues with limited bandwidth no matter what. Your testing will let you know what is the right way to go. Good luck with it all.👍
