Mobile broadband vs fibre

Hoping you can help!

Fairly new to EE (still awaiting my sim for my mobile). After a bit of advice around broadband and 5G mobile service. My current home broadband provider (Talktalk) provides a “fibre” service (only up to 65mbps download) - this is “guaranteed” at 55mbps but am getting no where near this! After lengthly troubleshooting steps, it turns out that minimum speeds (55mbps) is “guaranteed” when up to 5 devices are connected simultaneously…

Pretty much, I’m looking into mobile broadband in my area as EE offer 5G mobile data service in my area (Vance why I have swapped to them from 3 - even worse service on mobile data at home!). Am I better off buying a 5G router and 5G EE data sim in place of my “fibre” TalkTalk broadband? Is there better bandwidth for 5G data over a fibre connection? There are no internet service providers in my area that offer speeds greater than 70 Mbps in my area at the moment - I think I’ll have the same issue with them as I have with TalkTalk…

Not 100% sure where/if to start. All that I know is, I’m unable to use my home broadband effectively as have quite a few “smart” devices at home: laptops, TVs, smart switches, phones, iPads, lights etc. Hence a really slow speed…

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

The speed of your fixed BB connection is not dependant on the no. of devices using it. It is just shared out between them, whatever it is.

If you would like help with your BB speed or connection issues, please would you carry out the following steps for starters, which will enable us to diagnose the problem and advise you further. Do not restart your router to do these tests:

1. Post your full router stats:

For non-EE routers: login to it according to the label on it as the admin user & navigate looking for its router/connection statistics.

Full router stats are key to any speed & connection issues.

2. Try a wired speedtest, using an Ethernet cable supplied with the router, here http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html . Click on the "Results Page" button at the bottom of the graph you first see and then copy to here just the "Link to this result:" link that you see below the next main graph.

3. What does BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker estimate for your phone number? Post just the whole table and the line above it, blanking out your phone number. If it doesn't recognise your phone number or you don't have one, use the Address Checker, not the Postcode Checker.
